Trip from and to the Airport

Visitors to Brussels, Belgium, from both within and outside Europe have several airport options and transportation methods to reach the city center. Here's an overview:

Airports Serving Brussels:

  1. Brussels Airport (BRU): Located approximately 12 kilometers northeast of Brussels, this is the main international airport serving the city.
  2. Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL): Situated about 60 kilometers south of Brussels, this airport is popular with low-cost carriers.
  3. Lille Airport (LIL): Located in France, approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Brussels.
  4. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS): Situated about 200 kilometers north of Brussels in the Netherlands, it serves as a major international hub.

Transportation from Airports to Brussels City Center:

  • From Brussels Airport (BRU):
    • Train: Trains depart from the airport's underground station (Level -1) to Brussels' three main stations—North, Central, and South—every 15–20 minutes from 4:00 AM to midnight. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes, and a one-way ticket costs €10.30.
    • Taxi: Available at the airport taxi station, with fares ranging from €70 to €100, depending on traffic and time of day.
  • From Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL):
    • Shuttle Bus (Flibco): Buses depart every 30 minutes, taking about 55 minutes to reach Brussels-Midi (South) station. Tickets cost €17 one-way and can be purchased online or at the airport.
    • Taxi: Fares to Brussels city center range from €90 to €120, depending on traffic and time of day.
  • From Lille Airport (LIL):
    • Train: Travelers can take a shuttle or taxi to Lille's main train stations (Lille Flandres or Lille Europe) and then a direct train to Brussels, with a journey time of approximately 35 minutes.
  • From Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS):
    • Train: Direct high-speed trains (Thalys or Intercity) connect Schiphol to Brussels, with journeys taking between 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours.

Visa Requirements for Non-European Visitors:

  • ETIAS Authorization: Starting later in 2025, travelers from visa-exempt countries, including the UK, will need to obtain an ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) authorization before visiting Schengen Area countries, including Belgium. The ETIAS will be valid for three years or until the passport expires and allows stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period. The application process is online, costs €7 for travelers aged 18-70, and approval is typically quick.
  • Visa Requirements: Travelers from countries that are not visa-exempt must apply for a Schengen visa before traveling to Belgium. Requirements vary by country, so it's essential to check the specific visa requirements well in advance of your planned visit.

Useful Resources:

It's advisable to check the latest travel advisories and entry requirements before planning your trip, as policies and procedures can change.

Travel Insurance & Medical Preparedness

Visitors are strongly advised to have comprehensive travel insurance covering:

Medical emergencies: Hospitalization, doctor visits, and treatments.

Emergency repatriation: In case of severe medical issues requiring return to your home country.

Trip cancellations/delays: Protection against unexpected travel disruptions.

Lost or stolen belongings: Coverage for luggage, passports, and valuables.

European Visitors: If you are an EU citizen, carry your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for medical assistance in Belgium. However, an additional travel insurance policy is recommended.

Non-European Visitors: Ensure you have private travel insurance that includes medical coverage in Belgium. Some countries may require proof of insurance when applying for a Schengen visa.
